Connecting Pokémon cards are official cards whose artwork carries on from one card to the next, so when you lay them side by side they form one bigger picture. Some are pairs, some are trios, and some recent ones need nine cards spread across several sets. This guide explains how they work, which ones are worth knowing about, and how to lay them out in a binder so the picture actually joins up.
What are connecting Pokémon cards?
Collectors call them connecting art, connected art, linking art or puzzle cards. Bulbapedia's name for them is a combined illustration: a set of card illustrations that, when viewed together, form a larger image. They're usually drawn by one illustrator and released in the same expansion, though the biggest recent examples break that rule and spread their pieces across a whole year of sets.
There's a looser cousin too. Some cards don't share a single image but clearly tell a story together, like two Pokémon from the same scene drawn by the same artist. Those are lovely in a binder, but they're not strictly "connecting" in the sense people usually mean.
The quick way to check: the illustrator's name is printed at the bottom-left of every card. If two cards share an illustrator and a set, put them next to each other and look at the edges.
Every combined illustration, era by era
Here is every combined illustration on Bulbapedia's list: 95 groups and nearly 300 cards, from the Wizards of the Coast era right up to Mega Evolution. Each picture shows the cards in the order they join up, and the caption gives the set and card number so you can hunt them down. Where we make a Connecting Art insert for the same cards, there is a link under the picture. Jump to an era:

The gaps are pieces still to come.
Not included here: Pokémon LEGEND and V-UNION cards. Those are one Pokémon deliberately split across two or four cards, so they are less a shared scene and more a single card in pieces.
Connecting cards only work if the edges line up, and that takes a little planning.
Match the grid to the card count
Pairs sit side by side in the same row. Put them in the middle row of a 9-pocket page so they're at eye level.
Trios fill one row of a 9-pocket page exactly.
Nine-card panoramas fill a whole 9-pocket page, but check the shape. Some panoramas are wide rather than square, so work out the order from a reference image before you start sliding cards in.
Use side-loading pages
Side-loading pockets stop cards slipping and keep each card sitting in the same spot, which matters when you're trying to line up a horizon across three cards. Our binder guide explains what to look for.
Keep the sleeves consistent
If one card is in a penny sleeve and the next isn't, they'll sit at slightly different heights in the pocket and the join won't line up. Sleeve all of them or none of them.
Think about the facing page
A connecting page is a showpiece, so give it a quiet neighbour. A simple page of the same set or a single hero card works better than another busy scene fighting for attention.
Leave a gap for missing pieces
If you're still hunting the last card of a nine-card set, leave its pocket empty (or put in a placeholder) in the right position. It's a nice reminder of what's left, and you won't have to reshuffle later.
Make your own connected scene with Connecting Art inserts
Official connecting art is brilliant, but it only exists for the cards The Pokémon Company chose. Plenty of cards that obviously belong together don't connect at all: an evolution line from the same set, the three legendary birds, or a pair like Espeon and Umbreon.
Your cards aren't included. The insert is built around cards you already own.
Panels are printed on heavyweight matte card at standard card size (63 x 88 mm) with rounded corners, and arrive sleeved, so they slide into any 9-pocket page.
The artwork is created with AI assistance and then edited and finished by us, and every insert is printed, cut and sleeved in the UK.
They're £13.99 each with free tracked UK delivery.
If you'd rather fill a page around a single card, browse by set, starting with Pokémon 151 or Surging Sparks.
Connecting cards: quick questions
Which Pokémon cards connect together?
Well-known examples include the nine-card HYOGONOSUKE (2023) and Teeziro (2024) panoramas, the Crown Zenith Galarian Gallery Arceus and Creation Trio VSTARs, and pairs such as Zacian V and Zamazenta V from Celebrations. The gallery above shows every one, era by era.
How do I tell if my cards connect?
Check the illustrator name at the bottom-left of each card. Cards by the same artist in the same set or year are the most likely to join. Then line them up and look at the edges.
Are connecting cards worth more?
Sometimes a complete set is more sought after than the separate cards, but most of the modern nine-card runs are regular cards. Collect them because you like the picture.
Are Connecting Art inserts official?
No. They're our own printed designs and aren't affiliated with or endorsed by Nintendo or The Pokémon Company.
